A (mostly) sunny South Mountain Fair
by Brandon Mayer
After two consecutive years of being hit by heavy rain throughout at least one Fair day, this year’s South Mountain Fair was, for the most part, free from rainy weather. It was only on Sunday that some rain showers hit, but it didn’t take long for the sun to return.
Not only was the weekend weather wonderfully sunny for this historical annual event, but the temperatures were perfect, too. All around, organizers could not have hoped for a more splendid weekend this year for South Mountain’s claim to fame.
This year’s line up of events was as full as always, and the fair was complete with a strong midway, setting it apart from other fairs in the area that have opted for inflatable attractions in recent years. The ferris wheel offered an aerial view of the Fair and parts of South Mountain, while other attractions such as the pirate ship ride offer many thrills for riders young and not so young.
As usual, attendance at the Fair fluctuated throughout the day. Early risers and night owls enjoyed quicker access to rides and an easier access to the amenities in the Fairgrounds. Midday fairgoers enjoyed the classic Fair experience, with packed crowds and much excitement. Music and event announcements from the Fairgrounds could be heard throughout South Mountain into the evening hours from Thursday through Saturday.
While putting the Fair on took months of planning, and nearly a week of set up, the Fairgrounds were almost entirely packed up by the end of the day on Monday, with the midway rides and other amenities ready to put smiles on faces at the next area event.
Were there ever any doubts that this year’s South Mountain Fair would please everyone just like it does year after year? Of course not! The historic Fair is older than any living person on Earth, and will continue providing thrills, entertainment, and social connections for many years to come!
