The Ontario PC Party – currently in power – has called a snap election to be held on February 27. Unfortunately, print deadlines make the traditional interviews with local candidates impossible this time around. As of the time of writing (just a few short days before this current issue hit mailboxes across North Dundas), the candidates list was still incomplete. Since the next issue will come out on election day, the Times’ election coverage will be a list of confirmed candidates, any platform information available, and instructions on finding more up to date information as it becomes available. Ontario PC Party The Progressive Conservative candidate will once again be Cornwall native, Nolan Quinn, who is
the incumbent Member of Provincial Parliament for our riding, Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry. It will be up to voters to decide how well MPP Quinn and his party – led by Doug Ford – have done since being elected in 2022, and whether they deserve another term of up to 4 years in office. The SDSG riding has been a conservative stronghold both federally and provincially for over a decade. Will the trend continue? We’ll find out on February 27.
MPP Quinn’s website includes a bio, voting information, and other promotional links. The only platform information reads as follows: “Nolan and the Ontario PC Party remain focused on key priorities in Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry, including expanding high-speed internet for rural areas, improving water infrastructure to support new
housing, and funding community projects. These investments drive local economic growth and ensure families and businesses thrive, while worker training and healthcare initiatives provide better services and opportunities for residents.” MPP Quinn’s website is https://nolanquinn.ca/
Ontario Liberal Party
As of Monday, February 10, the Liberals had not yet registered a candidate for SDSG. A candidate who was going to be vetted for the nomination to the ballot reportedly backed out. The Liberals are likely to find someone willing to run, but Times readers will have to seek out the candidate’s information themselves due to print deadlines. The leader of the Ontario Liberal Party – hoping to become Ontario’s next Premier, is Bonnie Crombie.

Ontario New Democratic Party
The NDP candidate for the SDSG riding will be Jeremy Rose. Similar to the Ontario PC Party website, little platform information is available for the NDP party, besides a small blurb on Jeremy’s bio page which reads: “As Vice President of my union and a member of our local labour council, I’ve seen how government cutbacks hurt folks. It’s time for real change. I’m ready to fight for stronger public healthcare, fully funded education, and affordable housing. With deep roots in SD&G, I’m ready to be your voice at Queen’s Park!”

New Blue Party of Ontario
The New Blue Party added a local candidate earlier this week, and the name will sound familiar to many North Dundas residents. Winchester resident Stefan Kohut has put his name in the running for local MPP under the New Blue ticket. Stefan ran for a position on North Dundas Council in the 2022 election, but was unsuccessful. He runs a political discussion Facebook group called Politics North Dundas that focuses on municipal, provincial and federal issues.
There is no designated website that could be found for Stefan’s candidacy, but the Ontario Voter Information Service points directly to the general New Blue website when Stefan’s name is clicked. There, and extensive party platform can be viewed. The highlights of the platform listed are: “Renew accountability and promote meritocracy by stopping “woke” activism starting by eliminating critical race theory, gender identity theory, and all DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) initiatives from government (including in healthcare and education), and provide tax relief and grow Ontario’s economy by cutting the HST from 13% to 10%, axing the Doug Ford carbon tax, taking down wind turbines to reduce electricity prices, and cancelling all electrical vehicle subsidies.”
A 12 page PDF download is available featuring other aspects of the New Blue platform. It can be viewed at https://www.newblueontario.com/declaration
Other parties and how to learn more
It is uncertain whether other parties, such as the Green Party of Ontario, will find candidates in time for the February 27 election.
Readers are reminded that the official candidates list may have been updated after the current issue of the Times was printed. The most current source of election information, including how and where to vote, is the Voter Information Service at https://voterinformationservice.elections.on.ca/. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to casting a vote. The only bad decision is to fail to vote altogether. Don’t be afraid to get out and have your say on February 27.
